Oncoplastic Surgery
The Postgraduate Course Oncoplastic Surgery is an universitary programme at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the affiliated university hospital department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at UZ Brussel (UZB). This postgraduate course is an intensive and comprehensive programme of refinement in both reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery.
Oncoplastic Surgery
Prof. Hamdi and his team provide a large experience with a broad spectrum of clinical and research activities in the breast surgery field.
All types of breast reconstruction will be covered including both autologous (pedicled flaps, free flaps and perforator flaps) & implant-based breast reconstruction, as well as oncoplastic breast-conserving approaches to breast cancer. Various techniques of breast reduction and mastopexy together with implant breast augmentation procedures will be exposed by the different staff members of the department.
In addition, the department manages many referral cases for revision breast surgery. Fat grafting for both reconstructive and aesthetic indications is a daily practice. Finally, we offer to join the multidisciplinary approach to lymphedema in the European Center for Lymphatic Surgery.
The intended learning outcomes are situated in the organizational area of a department of plastic surgery, multidisciplinary consultation, intervention planning and preparation; as in a practical field with different surgical techniques and decision trees for treatment choice in the above mentioned domains. There is also a scientific part in which critical evaluation of scientific literature is taught, as is the writing & publishing of a scientific article.

How does it work?
The course consists of 10 different modules organised as theoretical teaching sessions in group, one-to-one coaching, practical teaching sessions in the skills lab, involvement in the daily clinical activities of the department and individual mentorship for a comprehensive written research report. Besides the basic & specialisation modules, each student can determine specific learning goals within the field of this postgraduate course.
The course is organised troughout the academic year. Individual adjustments to the programme may be considered based on the profile of the applicant.

Admission Requirements
Enrolling for this Study Plan is only possible after having obtained one of the following degrees:
- Licensed Breast Surgeon
- Licensed Plastic Surgeon
as well as Plastic Surgery Trainees in the last year of their training.
Every application will be reviewed by the Directors of the Postgraduate Course in Oncoplastic Surgery and they will have the final decision whether a student can be enrolled in this programme.
